Import regulations:

Free import if declared and carried in accompanied baggage:
1. for passenger of 16 years of age or older:
- 200 cigarettes or 250 grams of tobacco in any form;
- 1 liter of spirits and 1 liter of wine or beer;
- 250 milliliter of eau de toilette and 50 milliliter of perfume.
2. Personal effects.


Dogs and cats must be accompanied by a veterinarian good health certificate and a certificate of vaccination against rabies.

Baggage Clearance regulations:

Baggage is cleared at the first airport of entry in Malawi.

Exempt: baggage of transit passengers with a destination outside of Malawi.


Currency Import regulations:

Local currency (Malawi Kwacha-MWK): unlimited; foreign currencies: no restrictions, if declared on arrival.

Currency Export regulations:

- local currency (Malawi Kwacha-MWK): MWK 200.- or
- foreign currencies: the equivalent of MWK 200.-.
- local currency (Malawi Kwacha-MWK): MWK 200.-;
- foreign currencies: up to the amount imported and declared.

Airport Tax

A Service Charge is levied on passengers embarking in Blantyre and Lilongwe on:
1. International flights:
a. MWK 1,500.- for nationals and residents of Malawi.
b. USD 30.- for all other passengers.
2. Domestic flights for all passengers: MWK 200-.
Place of payment: Airport of departure.
1. Transit passengers whose stay in Malawi is less than 24 hours;
2. Children under 2 years.
