Import regulations:

Free import (irrespective of age) of the following:

200 cigarettes or 250 grams of tobacco;

1 liter of alcoholic beverages.

Arms and Ammunition regulations:

Import permit required.

Wild Fauna and Flora:

The import of certain endangered species of plant, live animals and their products is prohibited or restricted under CITES.

Export regulations:

Free export of the following:

a reasonable quantity of imported tobacco and alcoholic beverages for personal use;


Dogs and cats must be accompanied by an import authorization from the Veterinary Dept. and an additional health and rabies vaccination certificate in English.

Baggage Clearance regulations:

Baggage is cleared at the airport of final destination in Sierra Leone.

Exempt: baggage of transit passengers with a destination outside of Sierra Leone.


Currency Import regulations:

Allowed. Local currency (Sierra Leone Leone-SLL): SLL 50,000.-; foreign currencies (incl. traveler's cheques, bank drafts etc.): unlimited.

Currency Export regulations:

Residents: local currency (Sierra Leone Leone-SLL): up to SLL 50,000.-.
Foreign currencies: up to the value of USD 5,000.-. Exceeding amounts require authorization from the bank of Sierra Leone.
Non-Residents: local currency (Sierra Leone Leone-SLL): up to SLL 50,000.-.
Foreign currencies: up to the amount imported.

Airport Tax

Passenger Service Charge is levied on passengers when embarking in Sierra Leone on African carriers: USD 40.- or equivalent in SLL.
Place of payment: Airport of departure.
1. Transit passengers not leaving the airport and proceeding within 24 hours.
2. Children under 2 years.
