Import regulations:

Free import:
1. for passengers of 18 years or older:
- 200 cigarettes/cigars or 250 grams of tobacco;
- 2.25 liters of spirits or 4,5 liters of wine or 4,5 liters of beer.
2. for all passengers:
- personal effects;
- other goods up to a maximum value of TOP 500.-.

Arms and Ammunition regulations:

Import license required for firearms and ammunition.

Wild Fauna and Flora:

The import of certain endangered species of plant, live animals and their products is prohibited or restricted under CITES.

Additional Information on regulations:

Most plant import need an import permit and a governmental phytosanitary certificate.
Passengers coming from New Zealand may import up to a maximum of 20 kilograms of fruits, if holding a sales receipt as proof of purchase in New Zealand and declared on arrival.


Cats and dogs must be accompanied by a veterinarian good health and a rabies inoculation certificate issued at the point of origin. An import permit is also required and must accompany any animal that is to be imported. The import permit must be obtained in advance from the Government Veterinarian, P.O. Box 14 Nuku'alofa, Tonga.

Baggage Clearance regulations:

Baggage is cleared at the first airport of entry in Tonga.


Currency Import regulations:

Local currency (Pa'anga-TOP) and foreign currencies: must be declared on arrival.

Currency Export regulations:

Local currency (Pa'anga-TOP) and foreign currencies: up to the amount declared on arrival. If the amount exceeds TOP 10,000.- or equivalent in foreign currencies, prior approval from the National Reserve Bank of Tonga is required.

Airport Tax

Passenger Service Charge is levied on all passengers embarking on international flights: TOP 25.-.
Place of payment: Airport of departure.
1. Children under 12 years of age.
2. Diplomats accredited to Tonga.
3. Transit passengers continuing their journey by the same or first connecting flight within 24 hours.
4. Crew traveling on duty or positioning crew.
