Virtual APEC Business Travel Card (ABTC)

05 March 2021 16:21:52 CET

The virtual APEC Business Travel Card (ABTC) is the digital version of the long existing physical ABTC. It is displayed in a smart device ‘app’, which provides real-time updates on the status of the card, the countries the ABTC is valid for, new passport details, etc.

When traveling to an Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Member State, it provides cardholders from fully participating member states with an alternative way of presenting the ABTC, which is more secure and user-friendly. It also offers cached information in case passengers do not have access to internet when arriving at their destination, for up to 28 days.

Procedures remain unchanged, passengers present the virtual ABTC the same way they present the physical ABTC. Yet, passengers should enter and exit a country with the same version of the ABTC, i.e., either the virtual or the physical ABTC.

On 1 March 2021, Australia was the first APEC Member State offering the virtual ABTC to approved Australian cardholders. Other states will implement it on different dates, yet to be confirmed.

Cardholders from transitional member states (Canada and the United States) will not have access to the virtual ABTC. They can continue to use the physical ABTC.
